Escuela de Invierno V

Mark your calendars! On January 13th and 14th, 2026, the “V Escuela de Invierno” (5th Winter School) in heuristic optimization will take place. These sessions are aimed at master’s/PhD students or recent PhDs in the field of optimization and related areas, welcoming all members of the community who wish to participate.

On this occasion, after the editions in 2018 (Valencia), 2019 (Madrid), 2022 (Burgos) and 2024 (Seville), the city of La Laguna, Tenerife (2026) takes over, organized by Professor Belén Melián (Universidad de La Laguna) in collaboration with RedHEUR and the Heuristics Working Group of SEIO.

Activities

The Winter School will feature:

• Tutorials/Workshops/methodological sessions (invited speakers)
• Presentation and discussion of ongoing work (master’s/PhD students)

Featured Invited Speaker

On this occasion, we will have the participation of Professor Mauricio Resende, co-inventor of the GRASP methodology and expert in heuristic optimization, who will share with us his theoretical and practical knowledge related to some of the most relevant metaheuristic methodologies of today.

During the presentation and discussion of ongoing work, master’s/PhD students or recent PhDs who wish to do so (we highly encourage all to participate) will present the work they are currently undertaking and its challenges, to discuss them collectively, contribute ideas, and receive feedback from an expert panel.

Program

The tentative program will be sent in a few days. However, activities are expected to begin on Tuesday, January 13th, 2026, in the early afternoon (leaving the morning free for arrival in La Laguna) and end on Wednesday, January 14th, 2026, in the late morning.

Scholarships

The school offers 20 accommodation scholarships (shared room) and transportation for interested students (assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, for students who meet the funding criteria of the SEIO Working Group and with preference given to students who present their work).
